Choosing a dash camera has evolved beyond simple resolution and price checks. Today, models split into two categories: basic local recorders and smart cloud systems with constant tracking. Having tested the feature-packed 70mai A900 Ultra in my own car recently, I wanted to see how the standard 70mai A900 compares. The Ultra version has dual 4K Sony sensors and smart cloud alerts, but it costs more money and needs extra wiring kits. The standard 70mai A900 offers dual 4K video in a compact design without subscription fees, prompting a two-week road test to evaluate its performance.

Compact Design and Build Quality

The standard 70mai A900 stands out for its slim profile, measuring 91x46x24.9mm compared to the Ultra’s bulkier 92x60x51.4mm frame. This reduced size allows discreet mounting behind the rearview mirror without obstructing the driver’s view. The dark matte plastic body resists internal glare, and both front and rear units use USB-C ports for straightforward power connections.

The supercapacitor power system ensures reliability during summer heat or winter cold, unlike traditional lithium batteries that can fail under stress.

Simple Installation and App Connectivity

Setup requires minimal effort: attach the static mount to the windshield, plug into a 12V socket, and format a memory card via the menu screen. The camera creates a local Wi-Fi 6 hotspot, enabling quick pairing with the 70mai app for live viewing, setting adjustments, and clip downloads without mobile data usage.

Unlike the Ultra model, which demands a 4G hardwire kit for cloud features, the standard A900 operates independently with local storage, eliminating monthly fees or complex subscriptions.

Video Performance in Daylight and Night

Both front and rear cameras record full 4K at 30fps with HDR, delivering sharp, natural footage during daytime drives. The HDR system balances shadows and bright sunlight effectively, such as when passing through tunnels. Night vision reduces glare from oncoming headlights, though the Ultra’s Sony IMX678 sensors offer marginally better low-light detail at high speeds.

During evening commutes, the standard A900 produces crisp evidence, with license plates and road signs remaining legible.

Parking Surveillance and Battery Safety

The A900 supports G-sensor impact detection and time-lapse recording, activating to save protected clips if the car is bumped while parked. An optional hardwire kit enables these features safely, with an app-controlled low-voltage cutoff to prevent battery drain during extended parking periods.

The standard 70mai A900 delivers essential dash cam functionality without unnecessary complexity. Its dual 4K recording, compact design, and supercapacitor durability make it a strong value for drivers prioritizing local storage and straightforward setup.
