Trump’s stance on AI safety mirrors his past dismissals of climate science concerns, which he has repeatedly labeled a “hoax.” He framed current AI warnings as politically motivated, rather than stemming from genuine technical risks. The president argued that delaying AI advancements would only benefit China, which he said is aggressively pursuing its own AI dominance. His remarks contrast with bipartisan calls for cautious regulation, including those from tech executives and researchers.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has recently advocated for a temporary halt in developing advanced AI models to assess safety risks. Researchers at Anthropic have cautioned that the industry is moving too quickly toward self-improving systems without adequate safeguards. Meanwhile, major AI leaders—including OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, and Google’s Sundar Pichai—have also expressed support for development pauses, though Chinese officials have rejected such proposals, aligning with Trump’s opposition to regulatory measures.

The White House is preparing for a series of high-profile AI discussions this week. A senior-level meeting on AI policy will take place alongside the U.N.
