Apple’s latest iPad mini update delivers a larger OLED display, a more powerful processor, and several new capabilities, including water resistance and enhanced audio. The company describes the refresh as the most substantial for its smallest tablet to date.
The updated model keeps its compact dimensions while introducing an 8.5-inch OLED screen, an increase from the previous 8.3-inch display. Apple trimmed bezel thickness by 24% to accommodate the larger screen without expanding the device’s overall size. The new display offers 1,200 nits of peak brightness, more than double the prior model’s output, along with improved contrast and color accuracy. Customers can choose a nano-texture coating to minimize glare.
Under the hood, the iPad mini now features Apple’s A20 Pro chip, built on a 2nm manufacturing process. The company claims this chip delivers 60% faster multi-core CPU performance and 2.7 times faster graphics compared to the earlier version. AI processing sees a claimed 4.5x speed improvement thanks to new Neural Accelerators in the GPU. However, only the 512GB model includes the full 32-core Neural Engine; the 128GB and 256GB versions use a 16-core version instead.
Camera upgrades include a 12MP front-facing sensor with Center Stage support, improving video call quality when the device is held sideways. The rear camera also remains at 12MP and supports 4K video recording. A new Acoustic Display system enhances audio output, while connectivity improvements include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support. Cellular models incorporate Apple’s C2 modem.
The device has been slimmed down to 5.4mm in thickness, a reduction from the previous 6.3mm, and now carries an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. It will be available in Midnight and Starlight finishes, with storage options of 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB. Pricing begins at $699 for the Wi-Fi model and $849 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular version.
Pre-orders will open on October 28, with general availability set for November 6. Apple has yet to disclose local pricing for all regions.
The shift to OLED and performance enhancements strengthens the iPad mini’s competitive position, though the higher starting price may deter cost-sensitive buyers. The decision to limit the full Neural Engine to the top-tier model could also affect purchase decisions.
