Disney+ will premiere Code, a 12-episode Korean thriller starring Nam Joo-hyuk, in 2027. The series centers on a morally flexible lawyer who discovers a wish-granting app that delivers results at an ever-increasing, hidden price.
The App That Grants Wishes—and AI’s Alignment Problem
The premise has appeared before. The app in Code reflects what AI researchers term the “outer alignment problem”: a system that follows instructions literally without considering the user’s true goal. The same idea surfaced in W.W. Jacobs’ 1902 horror story The Monkey’s Paw, where a family’s request for £200 is fulfilled through their son’s fatal accident at work. The wish was granted, but the outcome was catastrophic.

The Code franchise updates this century-old tale for the digital age. The central conflict remains unchanged: a system that delivers exactly what is requested, not what is truly desired.
Nam Joo-hyuk Portrays a Lawyer Without Ethical Limits
Nam Joo-hyuk, who returned to acting in 2026 after completing his mandatory military service, stars as Yoon Tae-joo. He plays a former prosecution investigator turned corporate attorney who exploits legal gray areas to secure a partnership at a prestigious Seoul firm. Yoon isn’t corrupted by the app—he already lacks moral boundaries.
This approach distinguishes the Korean adaptation. The Taiwanese original followed an everyday man who discovered the app by chance. The Japanese remake focused on a detective driven by loss. The Korean version situates its lead in a high-pressure corporate world, where ambition and systemic expectations create ideal conditions for the app’s misuse.

The series adapts the Taiwanese Code: Faust Game (2016, 2019) and a 2023 Japanese remake starring Kentaro Sakaguchi. Director Yoo Soo-min, known for Weak Hero, will oversee the project.
A Cast of Prosecutors, Hackers, and Detectives
The full cast, announced on July 23, includes:
- Lee Yi-dam as Park Ji-dam, a Seoul prosecutor investigating cases tied to the app. She has a complicated past with Yoon.
- Kim Eui-sung as Jo Cheol-ho, a North Korean defector and hacker who teams up with Yoon. His role highlights the tension of someone who crossed one of Korea’s most significant borders, only to engage with a system operating outside all legal frameworks.
- Park Hoon as Im Chang-jae, a Violent Crimes Unit detective and Yoon’s closest ally. Their friendship will face challenges as the app’s consequences emerge.
A Franchise Finds Its Most Relevant Setting in Korea
The Code franchise has moved from Taiwan to Japan to South Korea, with each adaptation reflecting local anxieties. The Korean version’s focus on a lawyer within a competitive corporate environment is intentional. The series embeds the protagonist inside a corporate law firm — an institution already structured around the exploitation of information asymmetry — and asks what happens when someone who has already compromised his ethics encounters a system with no ethical constraint at all.

Disney+ has expanded its Korean originals slate, with recent successes like Moving (2023) and Gold Land (2026). Code joins a 2027 lineup that includes Bloody Flower and Made in Korea, strengthening the platform’s position in the competitive Korean streaming market.
Filming begins in late 2026, with production handled by SLL and Y-Works Entertainment. The latter previously produced Disney+’s Fine: Those Country Folk.
