Sumo Logic Inc. has expanded its Data Pipelines service to help customers reduce observability and security data costs. The updated service allows users to cut and reroute telemetry before it is ingested and stored, with controls situated within the company’s own platform.
According to Sumo Logic, security and operations teams are collecting more telemetry than ever, driven in part by the growing use of artificial intelligence workloads. Ingesting all this data can become expensive quickly, and the alternative of collecting less data can save money but may lead to missing important information during investigations.
Industry Challenges
Sumo Logic pointed to a recent Gartner Inc. report published Sept. 2 that describes organizations defaulting to ingesting all their operational data and analyzing it later. This approach has led to significant ingestion and storage costs, making it unworkable for many organizations. Furthermore, Gartner also noted that high volumes of poor-quality telemetry can hold back the generative AI and large language models reading that data, emphasizing the need for more efficient data management strategies.
Sumo Logic ingests and analyzes close to seven exabytes of data daily for thousands of security and operations customers. The company’s expanded Data Pipelines service gives customers more control over what data is ingested and stored, allowing them to make decisions about their data strategy before incurring costs.
New Capabilities
The updated service includes two key capabilities: a live preview that shows the impact of a rule on a data stream before it is applied, and an assistant that writes rules, a task that previously took hours to complete. The service also flags anomalies and format shifts in incoming data and provides recommendations on what to route, transform, or drop, subject to user approval.

Keith Kuchler, chief product and technology officer at Sumo Logic, noted that the company has spent 15 years helping customers turn large amounts of data into actionable insights. He added that moving data strategy decisions upstream allows teams to set the purpose of their data before paying to store it.
Further enhancements to the Data Pipelines service are planned for later this year, including a visual, AI-assisted way to shape telemetry before it lands in the platform or a customer’s cloud storage. This will be followed by a platform-neutral version that covers data headed to other vendors’ tools.
Sumo Logic is also planning to introduce an OpenTelemetry-native management layer, which will put collector configuration, monitoring, and deployment in one console, eliminating the need for additional agents and reducing costs.
