by Kurt Schlosser on Oct 19, 2026 at 6:34 pmCarbon Robotics, the Seattle-based agricultural technology company specializing in AI-driven laser-weeding systems, has announced workforce reductions across its global operations. The startup confirmed the layoffs to GeekWire without specifying how many employees were affected, though the cuts affect teams across multiple departments in both the U.S. and international offices. With 275 employees worldwide, vice president of marketing Brett Goodman explained the decision stems from realigning costs due to broader economic conditions.
The move comes after a phase of aggressive expansion for Carbon Robotics. In 2023, the company secured $20 million in funding to advance an undisclosed AI-powered farm robot, while its 2025 launch of an autonomous tractor kit expanded its product lineup. Carbon Robotics also unveiled its autonomous tractor kit in 2025, further diversifying its offerings. The centerpiece of its offerings remains the LaserWeeder G2, a precision tool that uses AI to identify and map plants in fields and then target and eliminate weeds with lasers. This machine, which can be pulled behind a tractor, represents the latest iteration of Carbon Robotics’ commitment to sustainable farming automation.
Founded in 2018 under CEO Paul Mikesell, Carbon Robotics has attracted nearly $177 million in total investments from backers including BOND, NVentures, and Anthos Capital, which have supported the company’s growth through various funding rounds. Mikesell told AgFunder that the company exceeded $100 million in annual revenue, stating plans to continue rapid scaling with an eventual public offering through an IPO. He also highlighted the company’s strategic focus on scaling its product line and entering new agricultural markets as key drivers for the IPO timeline.
Public visibility for Carbon Robotics surged after U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. promoted its technology on The Joe Rogan Experience, framing it as a solution to reduce agricultural chemical use. The company’s reputation further solidified when it earned the Next Tech Titan honor at the 2026 GeekWire Awards earlier this year. The recognition highlighted Carbon Robotics’ innovative approach to reducing chemical use in agriculture through advanced laser technology. The company is currently ranked No. 8 on the GeekWire 200 index of the Pacific Northwest’s top startups.
